3 Artists from Krakow Poland

Highpoint Center for Printmaking invites you to a very special evening in March. Please join us in welcoming three artists from Krakow, Poland as we host them for an artist’s reception and the opening show of their prints. Thanks to a generous donation from Raymond Plank, Chairman and CEO of Apache Corporation, we were able to fund travel, housing and program costs for visits by printmakers Anna Sobol-Wejman, Dariusz Vasina, and Stanislaw Wejman. Mr. Plank, whose company does business in Poland, wishes to support cultural interaction between Poland and the United States. In a recent letter he commented: “the artist has a role to play in this [Poland’s future], perhaps as much if not more than those who seek the levers of power…” His support of these artists from Poland, allowing them to travel to Minneapolis to show their work, interact with the public, artists and students, and create prints at Highpoint is instrumental in the fulfillment of our mission.
This project was initially proposed by a former HP intern, Tyler Starr, and Miki Kato, both currently graduate students in printmaking at the University of Minnesota. Tyler had worked with these artists when studying in Krakow with the help of a 1998 Fulbright Scholarship, and was impressed with their work and approach to printmaking. Miki Kato graduated from Professor Wejman's atelier at the Krakow Academy of Fine Art. Highpoint encouraged the idea of a show at the HP Gallery, but never imagined being able to fund a visit by the artists. Thanks to Raymond Plank’s gift, this project will impact many and the international relationship Highpoint will establish with these artists and Poland is invaluable.
Briefly, this project will accomplish the following: the invited artists Anna Sobol-Wejman, Dariusz Vasina, and Stanislaw Wejman will arrive in the Twin Cities February 27 to assist with final show preparation and attend the reception at Highpoint in their honor on Friday, March 1, 6:30 – 9:00 PM. During the next week of their stay, March 4 thru 8, the artists will be at Highpoint Center daily working with Master Printer Cole Rogers. HP plans on engaging printmaking students from area schools to assist the Polish artists during their stay. Also, there will be opportunities for the community to observe the artists at work.
About the Artists:
Anna Sobol-Wejman born in 1946, graduated from the Cracovian Academy of Fine Arts in 1972. She studied under Prof. Mieczyslaw Wejman and Prof. Wlodzimierz Kunz. She was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Biennial of Graphic Arts in Gyor. She has shown in numerous group and individual exhibitions and her works are in collections of The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Biblioteka Narodowa, Warsaw; Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna to name a few. Her work uses contemporary figurations that make references to ancient sources, playing with time and associations.
Dariusz Vasina was born in 1964. He studied at the Print Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow at the atelier of Prof. Stanislaw Wejman, and graduated in 1990. He has worked as assistant the the Print Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and belongs to the artistic group Three Eyes. His interests are print, painting and drawing. He also makes 3-dimensional objects. Dariusz has shown work in both individual and group exhibitions and also has received Grand Prix Awards three times in Krakow. Vasina’s prints and drawings tell stories with a devious and dream-like twist, often with allusions to good and evil.
Stanislaw Wejman was born in 1944. He studied under his father Prof. Mieczyslaw Wejman at the Print Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and graduated in 1968. Currently he is a professor of the Krakow Academy and has taught classes in copper engraving. His interests are in print and painting. Over the span of his career he has shown in many exhibitions and his work is collected by The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Benton Museum of Art, CT; Graphische Samlung Albertina, Sweden; and Biblioteka Norodowa, Warsaw among others. Wejman’s work expresses a seamless blend of dichotomic qualities such as abstraction and the figure, organic and inorganic forms.
