Past School and Community Partnerships

Since opening in 2001 Highpoint has been working with Minnesota schools as part of our school partnership program. We would like to highlight three such connections with three distinctly different focuses on arts education at Highpoint.

Highpoint has a long-standing relationship with Belle Plaine High School who visits multiple times each year. Art Teacher Carol Orr has been bringing her students to Highpoint for many years to expand on their printmaking experiences. By visiting multiple times, students have built upon their foundational knowledge and expanded their work into larger projects. Students from Belle Plaine have gone beyond our introductory courses to complete large-scale monoprints and editioned screen prints.

YouthCARE Minnesota has partnered with Highpoint for over a year. YouthCARE is a multicultural organization dedicated to helping urban youth develop the life skills needed to make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. YouthCARE has brought various groups of youth to Highpoint to experience all of our introductory printmaking classes. Students have printed colorful and expressive monoprints, drawing-based drypoints on zinc plates and carving-based relief cuts on soft kut. Students were given a demonstration during each visit and then set loose to get their hands inky and experiment with color mixing, ink application and a variety of printing techniques. Along with the hands-on art-making experience, youth visitors also had a full tour of Highpoint’s studios to get a sense of what their interest in art could lead to one day. All of the students with YouthCARE were able to visit Highpoint on full scholarship.

Chaska High School is a new partner with Highpoint. Students visited Highpoint for a special monoprinting workshop to further explore traditional mola patterns they were learning in their art class. Originated by Kuna women of Panama and Colombia, molas are traditional garments created through complex patterns that are sewn into layers of fabric. Portions of the fabric are cut away to reveal the bright layers of fabric below. Students were challenged to recreate mola patterns in print form. They completed a monoprinting workshop where they layered paper stencils to mimic the layering of fabric and mixed ink to mirror the vibrant colors utilized by the Kuna women. Although the stencils took over an hour to cut out, the final prints looked amazing.
