As If

New Prints by Brian Hartley Sago
October 26, 2013 – December 20, 2013

As If is a series of intaglio prints that investigates the 151 savants – the artists, scientists, engineers and mathematicians who accompanied Napoleon on his 1798 invasion of Egypt (along with 50,000 soldiers and sailors). As a military expedition it was an utter failure. The entire French fleet was lost in a single battle and a third of the soldiers and sailors died – most from the plague rather than as casualties of battle. The French were expelled from Egypt in less than three years. However what the savants achieved during those three years was longer lasting, and as such is the focus of this solo exhibition by longstanding HP co-op member Brian Hartley Sago.

This digital archive contains more than 1,500 vector-based drawings, which depict everything from birds and wolves to airplanes and digitized paint drips. Amorales cultivates the replication and reconfiguration of his archive through collaborations with composers, animators, designers and other artists. While working with Highpoint Editions, this strategy led to the production of wonderful new prints.

The LOOK/SEE! exhibit features prints made by metro-area students during the 2005–2006 school year. Every year, Highpoint partners with dozens of area schools to share the fun of printmaking with Minnesota’s youth. Student visitors range in age from 8–18 and represent diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In a typical school partnership, up to 25 students visit HP as a group and spend several hours learning about and creating prints. Monotype, drypoint, and relief printmaking are techniques of choice for these classes because of their immediacy and simplicity—with these methods, anyone can produce several prints in just an hour or two.

Contemporary Scottish Prints

Friday, March 31, 2006, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
March 31, 2006 – April 28, 2006

Just in time for Spring, Highpoint is delighted to present an exhibition of contemporary prints from Scottish print studios. While attending the Artists/editions contemporary print fair in November 2005, HP’s Directors, Cole Rogers and Carla McGrath met a group of Scottish print shop directors. Impressed with the variety and quality of the prints on display in their booth in New York City, HP later proposed hosting a show of the work at HP’s Minneapolis gallery. Prints from the studios of the Edinburgh Printmakers and Glasgow Print Studio will be on display.

February 3, 2006 – March 17, 2006

Imagine a world of mysterious, far-flung places, where time seems to have come to a long-ago standstill. Here, a scrap-wood footbridge precariously spans a wide, flowing river. An old-fashioned cargo ship washes to shore on a deserted beach. Aeroplanes, flying machines, and extraterrestrial spacecraft brush through the clouds. Shanties and shacks cling bravely to cliffs and treetops, and group together on the outskirts of shadowy unnamed cities.
