Making Monotypes without a Press

Making Monotypes without a Press
Dates: Saturday, October 9 and Sunday, October 10; 10a.m. – 4p.m.
Ages: 18+; for beginning students
Cost: $235
Registration deadline: Friday, October 1
Enrollment: Maximum 10
Instructor: Anda Tanaka

The monotype marries printmaking and painting like no other medium. During this two-day workshop students will learn to make prints using additive, subtractive, and stencil techniques. We will also look at examples of the monotype—from Degas to the present—in order to consider the expressive potential of the medium and to challenge the misconception that the monotype is only a painterly technique. Making prints without a press, students will experiment with mark-making and layering in order to discover how monotype printing can enhance their personal creative practices at home or in the studio. Monotypes are spontaneous in nature, so students can expect to take several resolved prints home at the end of the workshop. Note: The class description and instructor have been updated as of September 17, 2021.
