Alternative Print Processes

OLMC3 by Connor Rice (CRICE)

This class is based on explorative and experimental print processes. The focus will be printing on non-traditional materials, innovative methods, and unique applications of printmaking. The course will offer the participants insight into innovative printing approaches currently being done within public art, multi-media installations and textile applications. Additionally the class will create space for individuals to look at their own print practice in a new light. The course will feature demonstrations, guest speakers, and opportunities to show work. The class will meet 9 times over 7 weeks (7 consecutive Tuesday evenings along with 2 Saturdays).

Participants will be provided the materials to practice printing on an array of substances such as traditional fabrics as well as synthetic materials like polytab. While a basic understanding of screen and relief printing is recommended, there will be basic instructions during each demo. We will hear from artists that use print in unusual applications, create installations with their prints and that incorporate print within public art settings. Following each guest speaker the class will create pieces with the introduced methods. At the end of the class each participant will have gotten an opportunity to create their own scaled versions of original techniques and strategies that will be introduced. Individuals will also gain a new perspective of print as an artistic approach.

About the instructor: Connor Rice (CRICE) (he/him) is an artist and designer from Southside Minneapolis. He is a recent recipient of the Metro Regional Arts Council’s Next Step Fund, the Minnesota State Arts board emerging artist grant, and a Jerome Foundation Emerging Printmakers resident. Sociopolitical issues concerning race, class and the environment influence his work greatly. As a multi-media artist working with printing, public art techniques and digital tools he is always attempting to bridge the gap between traditional methods and innovative technologies. His aesthetic is heavily influenced by hip-hop and street art as well as ancient propaganda. By using stark iconography with a bold color palette on a large scale his work is provocative in how it relates to the viewer’s relation to space. He employs ancient symbols and blends them with a modern sensibility in order to distort our preconceived notions of human history.
