Woodcuts by El Colegio Students

On View: May 16, 2003 – June 6, 2003
Friday, May 16, 2003 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Join high school artists from El Colegio Charter School and artists Gustavo Lira and Savita Bettaglio to celebrating this unique community partnership. Highpoint and El Colegio created this program to nurture and expand the understanding and practice of printmaking for the students of El Colegio by emphasizing the cultural and historical impact of Latin American culture on the art of printmaking. Under the guidance of artists Gustavo Lira and Savita Bettaglio students worked at Highpoint for five weeks this spring planning imagery, learning woodcut techniques and creating prints. This exhibit at Highpoint is the culmination of our partnership and the students’ hard work.

El Colegio Charter School, founded in 1999, is dedicated to increasing the graduation rate for Latinos and other students of color. The school has consistently used the arts as a means to bring diverse students together. Highpoint Center for Printmaking, founded in 2001, provides educational programs, community access and collaborative publishing opportunities to engage the community and increase the appreciation and understanding of the printmaking arts.
