On View: September 10, 2004 – October 6, 2004
Friday, September 10, 2004 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
November’s election is almost here, and everyone’s thinking “politics”. Although the current focus is on national affairs, it’s timely to consider how democracy affects our lives on a more personal level—as citizens, as artists, and as part of a diverse local community. This fall, Highpoint and Grupo Soap del Corazon (a Twin Cities-based Latino arts group) will come together to explore these connections through the project Gráfica Política, featuring the creation and exhibition of new prints by Latino artists. An opening reception on Friday, September 10, will jump-start the Gráfica Política gallery show at HP. All are invited to attend this free event, which will take place from 6:30 – 9:00 PM.
Created in 2000 to celebrate and expand understanding of local Latino culture, Grupo Soap del Corazon (Soap of the Heart Group) has exhibited together at a number of Twin Cities locales, including public murals along Lake Street, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Grupo Soap founders Xavier Tavera and Douglas Padilla, along with Highpoint teacher/artist Brian Sago, have been chosen to lead a group of Latino artists through the Gráfica Política collaboration. After learning about the history of Latin-American prints and posters, the participant artists will access HP’s studio facilities to learn screenprinting and create their own limited-edition posters about democracy.
These new works will be the focus of the gallery show at Highpoint. In addition, the prints created through Gráfica Política will be displayed in an exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and at many public spaces throughout the region, including community centers, art/cultural venues, and storefronts. This approach will broaden the spectrum of Gráfica Política’s audience, thereby touching a number of people and communities. We hope to see you there!
