We will utilize the power of the sun during this indoor/outdoor workshop. Weather permitting, we will work in Highpoint’s garden and parking lot.

Participants will learn how to make unique blue cyanotype prints, from preparing the paper to exposing in sunlight then developing the image in ordinary water. Friday night will be learning the process, demonstrations and coating the paper so it can dry overnight. Saturday will be instructor-supported free work time with a lunch break.

This is a stencil-based contact-printing process and is well suited to using plant material to make images. Students can bring leaves and flowers and other flat objects and various materials to experiment with. We will also explore other ways of making stencils for exposure, utilizing drawing and painting materials on clear film. This part of the workshop will center on hand-drawn or cut-out imagery so bring your ideas! While this process can also be used to print photographic negatives, Highpoint does not supply digital output, but students may bring their own.

About the instructors: Kristin Bickal (she/her) is a visual artist who studied design and photography as an undergraduate. After retiring from a long career as a creative director, she returned to studying printmaking and the book arts full time. She’s an experienced instructor in several print methods at Highpoint. Her own work explores the intersections of commercial and fine art as well as reflecting her interest in the natural environment, textiles, memory, and people’s things that are left behind. @cincybicks

Beth Dorsey (she/her) is a printmaker who resides in the Twin Cities. She is interested in playing with a variety of print processes and approaches printmaking in an experimental way. She is experienced with using cyanotype and has combined it with other printing methods. She thinks out of the box and encourages other to approach their work in this manner. Her work is mostly abstract and often is pattern based.  @bdorsey48
