This introductory course offers students a hands-on exploration of traditional intaglio printmaking, where they will learn to create detailed and textured prints. Intaglio printmaking involves making marks on a metal plate using a variety of tools. Ink is then carded onto the plate and wiped away on the surface, leaving ink only in the recessed areas; it is then printed onto damp paper to produce the final image. Participants will begin with drypoint, inscribing directly into the plate, before progressing to the time-honored techniques of line etching, soft ground, and aquatint. As they develop their images, students will practice essential inking, wiping, and printing techniques. By the end of the course, they will have a solid foundation in core intaglio methods and original prints showcasing their progress and creativity.

Goals and outcomes: explore, learn and combine drypoint, line etch, soft ground, and aquatint. Students will likely produce 2-3 images.
