Explore the tactile and expressive medium of woodcut printmaking with this 3 day, intermediate level workshop. Meant for artists who have some experience with hand carving and printing a relief block; who are looking to expand their set of skills and explore the medium.

In this hands-on workshop, learn to plan, carve, and edition a rich, multilayered woodcut using a hand-carved plywood block, paper stencils, and oil-based, water-soluble ink (Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks). You will be guided through a method that produces a small edition of bleed prints (a print without paper borders). Participants will use shina or birch plywood, and kitakata or similar paper. The workshop will go over methods to print with or without a press, though the focus during the course will be on printing with a press. Materials used in the class are all non-toxic, and safe for home or studio use.

Through practical demonstrations and guidance, you will learn:

  • Maintaining and sharpening woodcut tools

  • Block preparation and carving techniques

  • Image preparation, layer planning, and color theory

  • How to print and edition with an eye towards experimentation using reductive methods, selective inking, and stenciling

Woodcut tools recommended: While we have woodcut tools available for use in the classroom, it is highly recommended you get a basic set of quality tools for this class. The instructor uses a combination of Nemesi Moku Hanga To and Power Grip tools. Woodcut tool preference varies widely, so take a look at these options and chose based on your budget and hand size:

Nemesi Moku Hanga To - While the sets are often out of stock at McClains, you can make your own set. Use the sets listed as a guide. While more expensive, these are the best quality budget friendly tools listed here, and the handle length can be cut to preference and hand size.

Flexcut Beginners Palm Set - Good quality tools best for medium to small hand size.

Five Piece Power Grip Carving Set - Good quality tools best for medium to large hand sizes.

If you are in Minneapolis, or don’t want to order online, you can also stop by Woodcraft of Minneapolis. They carry a selection of tools, though are more focused on sculptural wood carving. Contact Tyler if you have questions about tools for this class: tyler@highpointprintmaking.org
