What is love if not a gentle spiral? In this class, we will create beautiful, medium-sized, handmade sketchbooks bound by spirals and covered in monotypes. We'll first examine the personal sketchbook. How do we acquaint ourselves with a sketchbook? Where does it fit in our hand, and how do we find its use? Crossing between book arts and printmaking, we'll demo a spiral bind on the machine. How does this machine think? What are its limitations? And the ways it expands ours? What themes does it lend itself to? Then, the experiment begins with screen-based monotype printmaking. It's a watercolor/screenprint hybrid, and it's how we'll make the covers, borders, and marginalia for our sketchbooks. This class is dedicated to learning to love the spiral binding machine...not for its efficiency or sleekness but for the slow, intentional, and exacting movements it requires. And we'll embody the same.
About Sampler Sessions:
Sampler Sessions are introductory, hands-on workshops for those interested in exploring the basics of printmaking. Classes take place in the evening, and have no prerequisites. Workshops begin with a demonstration with most of the class period used for exploring the print process learned. All materials included with class fee. Please call or check the website for updates.
About the instructor: Sophie likes markers and the way crayons feel on a stone. And when they were a kid, they liked hot bulletins from the Xerox machine and the grit on Shell Silverstein books. Sophie graduated in 2021 with a BA in Studio Arts from Carleton College and tries to share all the magic they’ve ever found in prints as a resident artist at Solis-Cohen Elementary School. Their work is about how we hold on to things that don’t want to be held and how time sometimes feels very slippery.
