Chloe Piene
Chloe Piene is known for her intense and powerful work. Since the late 1990s, she has been making charcoal drawings showing the ambiguous physical boundaries between men and women, people and animals. Critics have compared her drawings to Egon Shiele's emaciated self portraits and Edvard Munch's depictions of death and maidens, yet Piene's figures materialize and inhabit the page in a way that is uniquely theirs.
She has had solo shows at Klemens Gasser & Tanja Grunert, Inc., New York; Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin; Carré d’Art—Musée d’Art Contemporain, Nîmes; Witte de With, Rotterdam; and Kunsthalle Bern, Bern. She also participated in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Chloe Piene lives and works in New York and Berlin. She is represented by Barbara Thrumm Gallery (Berlin).
