FRANKIE PALMER
Artist statement:
Generally in my art, I like to focus on topics and themes that interest me, whether it be a genre of art such as German expressionism, or themes like the oppression of the LGBT+ community. While working at Highpoint, I developed a strong interest in screenprinting and its possibilities. I played with textures that are achievable through screenprinting so that the pieces I created wouldn’t be as flat and solid as screenprints often can be. For my final project, I re-imagined four Rococo portraits by changing their characteristics through the use of color and texture. I focused on the hands of the subjects because I feel that in a lot of paintings, the hands and faces are the most interesting elements and they express what is happening in the piece. I redrew the portraits and made positives to expose onto the screens using different materials that would have different effects on the prints, for example, sharpies, acrylic paint, wax pencils, etc. Then when printing, I used very bright, strong colors to make the prints have a fauvist style color scheme. In my work, I experiment in the use of color and light, and how that affects the ways that people interpret works.
