Artist statement: Pretty Little Things
My concept explores how society often ties a woman’s value to her appearance. The idea is that people will be drawn to the colorful wings of the butterfly and overlook that a real, living person resides under the beauty. The pinning of the butterfly collection also plays on the idea that a beautiful woman is seen as a trophy to be owned. The title also suggests that women are seen as pretty little things to be collected.
Artist statement: Nurturer
This piece is inspired by the Art Nouveau style in the golden age of the poster, which emphasized nature, optimism, and the shifting role of women. It is an environmental piece that features a woman crying rain onto the earth she is holding. The woman represents mother earth (mother symbolizing nurturer) trying to care for our earth that is currently under threat from climate change.
